LoonWatch is a program coordinated through the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. Their mission is the conservation and protection of loons and their aquatic habitat through education, monitoring and research, with their primary focus being Wisconsin. Several district members participate in the LoonWatch program by annually recording loon activities such as migration, nesting, chick rearing and chick survival on our district waters.
July 16, 2011, a special 2011 Wisconsin Loon Population Survey was taken. Explosion Lake and Horn Lake are 2 lakes that are part of this state-wide survey. This population survey is normally taken every 5 years and was done last year, 2010. However, due to the Gulf Oil Spill disaster, it was decided to do a follow-up survey this year to determine if our loon population was affected at all by the oil spill. Results of this survey will be posted on this website when they are available.
Anyone interested in being a new volunteer for the LoonWatch program should contact Joanne Jones – the more volunteers we have monitoring loon activity, the better.
