The water level has been lowered on Reservoir to help the effectiveness of our EWM chemical treatment. The gates on the dam will be closed after treatment and our water level should come up some with the pending rain. However, our water level will be lowered again starting the week of 6/15. This will be in preparation for the 6/24 culvert replacement below the dam on Burnt Dam Road. The water level should start returning to normal after that.
The repairs on the Reservoir Dam were completed in 2013. Two new spillways were installed along with a metal walkway and gate to regulate the water level. Oconto County is the owner of this dam and therefore is responsible for its maintenance and the regulation of the water levels. Oconto County officials have said the water levels would be maintained at the maximum level allowed by the operational permit issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources from approximately May 1st through October 31st. The maximum level is obtained by the placement of boards in one or both of the spillways. As always, water levels will fluctuate somewhat depending on the amount of rainfall or lack thereof. Lowering of the water level in the early spring is to be expected so that the dam can be inspected and to prevent high water from developing and causing damage. The contract for our new dam was awarded yesterday at the County Board meeting. The drawdown of our water began Monday, August 20. Although the water isn't lowering 6 inches per day as originally estimated, the County feels the start of the project should be fine and the dam will remain open until the 6 foot level is reached.
